Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy saltwater/streamer hook, 2/0 to 4/0
  • Thread White 3/0 (210 denier)

Materials

  • Tail White saddle hackles (6-8)
  • Flash Pearl and silver flash (10-12 strands)
  • Belly White bucktail (1 clump)
  • Wing/Back Olive or gray bucktail (1 clump)
  • Topping Peacock herl or dark flash (6-8 strands)
  • Eyes Large 3D stick-on (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the rear third and lay a firm base for the long feathers.
  2. Bind six to eight white saddle hackles as a splayed baitfish tail nearly two shank lengths long.
  3. Add generous flash along both sides, then a white bucktail belly and an olive or gray bucktail back to build depth.
  4. Top the wing with a few strands of peacock herl or dark flash for a lateral line.
  5. Build a large tapered head and set the oversized eyes low on each side.
  6. Whip finish and lock everything under a heavy coat of epoxy or UV resin.
