Reference Recipe

  • Hook straight-eye dry fly hook (TMC 101), 14 (12-16)
  • Thread black 12/0

Materials

  • Fly foam, 2 mm Black craft foam mm (1 strip (abdomen and head))
  • CDC puff White cdc (1 (wing))
  • Rooster hackle Grizzly hackle (1 dry-fly feather)
  • Rubber legs Brown silly legs nymph size (2 strands, small)

How to tie it

  1. Start the black thread at mid-shank and lay a thread base back to the bend; give the bobbin a twist to cord the thread so it won't fray on the foam.
  2. Tie in the end of a 2 mm black foam strip at the bend, binding it straight down on top of the shank.
  3. Fold the foam over and cross the thread over it to cinch off a first plump segment; pull the foam back, advance the thread a few turns forward, and cinch a second, slightly smaller segment the same way, then bind down the loose end and trim. You now have a chunky two-lump abdomen over the rear half of the shank.
  4. Advance the thread to just short of the eye, stretch the remaining foam slightly thinner, and tie it down there; trim the strip, then double the tag back over itself and lock it down to form a round, bulbous head.
  5. At the waist between abdomen and head, tie in a white CDC puff so it sticks straight up as a wing; slide the scissors in flat and trim the butt flush against the foam.
  6. Prep a grizzly dry-fly hackle by trimming the barbs at the base of the stem to short stubble, then tie the stem in firmly at the waist, tight back against the abdomen.
  7. Tie a strand of small brown rubber leg along each side of the waist with cross wraps, leaving the ends long. You want legs sweeping out fore and aft on both sides.
  8. Wrap the hackle three or four turns through the waist around the CDC wing; tie off behind the head, watching the CDC, and trim the tip.
  9. Whip finish at the waist behind the head, clip the thread, and add a tiny drop of cement.
  10. Trim the rubber legs to about one shank length per side.
