Reference Recipe

  • Hook Daiichi 1167 / 1160 (curved terrestrial/klinkhamer hook), 14 (range 12-20)
  • Thread Red 14/0 (Veevus)

Materials

  • Sheet foam (body) 3mm, black (1 cut strip)
  • Superfine dubbing (abdomen and thorax) Mahogany (As needed)
  • Super floss (legs) Black floss (2 strands)
  • Poly macrame yarn (wing) Mixed smoke/rust/gold (1 clump)
  • Ripple Ice Fiber (wing topping) UV blue ripple ice fiber (Few strands)
  • Razor foam (indicator) Pink foam mm (1 small tab)
  • Rooster hackle Brown hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread mid-shank and lay a base down around the bend and back; coat the base with a thin layer of super glue.
  2. Cut a strip of 3mm black foam (roughly square in cross-section, top edges rounded); tie it on top of the shank at the hook point and spiral-wrap it rearward over the glued base to the bend, keeping it sitting upright.
  3. Dub a fat, tapered mahogany abdomen, building up a plump rear gaster, then run the thread forward to the front edge of the dubbing.
  4. Add a drop of glue, pull the foam forward over the top to form the rear body segment, and lock it with a couple of wraps; jump the thread forward an eye-length or two and bind again to make a thread waist.
  5. Tie a strand of black super floss on each side across the waist, positioning them to splay evenly.
  6. Lift the foam, bring it forward another third, bind it, and make another thread-band segment.
  7. Tie in a clump of mixed poly macrame yarn as an upright wing, topped with a few strands of UV blue ripple ice fiber.
  8. Tie in and wind a brown rooster hackle through the thorax, then dub a mahogany thorax to fill in around it.
  9. Add a small tab of pink razor foam over the top as a sight indicator.
  10. Whip finish at the eye and trim the legs and wing to length.
