Bi-Wing Drake

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 10 to 12
  • Thread Olive 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tail Moose body or dark microfibbets (3-4 fibers, split)
  • Body Olive-yellow dubbing (tapered)
  • Rib Brown thread or fine wire (1)
  • Wings Medium dun hen hackle tips (2, upright and split)
  • Hackle Grizzly and brown, mixed (2)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at mid-shank and run a smooth base to the bend.
  2. Split-mount a tail one shank length long, flared into a wide V for balance.
  3. Tie in the rib, then dub a tapered olive-yellow body forward to the 65% mark and counter-wrap the rib for segmentation.
  4. Pair two dun hen tips back to back and stand them upright, then split them into a bi-wing with figure-8 thread turns.
  5. Post the wing bases and wind a mixed grizzly and brown hackle four to five turns through the thorax.
  6. Sweep stray fibers clear of the eye, whip finish, and add a tiny drop of cement at the head.
