Reference Recipe

  • Hook Steelhead stinger hook rigged on a clear plastic tube (or a heavy salmon/steelhead iron), 1 to 2 (short-shank stinger trailer)
  • Thread Black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Tube/Hook Clear tube with short stinger hook (1)
  • Butt Sunkissed orange dubbing (small ball)
  • Rear Hackle Golden pheasant tippet, dyed fl. orange (1 collar)
  • Rear Wing Craft fur, flame orange (sparse clump)
  • Rib Small silver oval tinsel (1)
  • Body Pearl flashabou over black thread (wrapped body)
  • Body Hackle Saddle hackle, fl. orange (1)
  • Prop/Collar Hot orange opossum or soft dubbing (1 turn)
  • Front Wing Craft fur, fl. orange (sparse clump)

How to tie it

  1. Seat a clear tube on your tube tool (or mount the stinger hook) and start black thread at the rear quarter.
  2. Dub a small sunkissed-orange butt ball, then wind a soft collar of fl. orange golden pheasant tippet and sweep the fibers back.
  3. Tie in a sparse rear wing of flame-orange craft fur over the top, keeping it thin so it breathes in the swing.
  4. Bind in the oval silver rib, then cover the rear half with black thread and pearl flashabou for a shimmering body.
  5. Palmer the fl. orange saddle hackle forward over the flash body and counter-wrap the rib to lock it, then sweep the fibers rearward.
  6. Spin a thin dubbing collar of hot orange at the front as a prop to push water and add a sparse front wing of fl. orange craft fur.
  7. Build a neat head, whip finish, and coat with head cement; tie a blue version for clear water and this orange one for color.
