Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL streamer/salmon dry hook, 4-8
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Brown calf tail (Small clump)
  • Body Yellow and black deer hair (Spun and clipped, banded)
  • Palmer Hackle Brown hackle (1 saddle feather)
  • Wing White calf tail (Small clump, forward)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start the thread at the bend.
  2. Tie in a short brown calf-tail tail, one gap long, and tie in a brown saddle hackle by the tip at the tail.
  3. Spin and pack alternating clumps of black and yellow deer hair up the shank, packing each bunch tight to build a dense bee-banded body.
  4. Whip a temporary knot, remove from the vise if needed, and trim the spun hair into a fat, tapered cigar shape.
  5. Palmer the brown hackle forward through the clipped body in 5-6 open turns and tie it off behind the eye.
  6. Tie in a short white calf-tail wing angled forward over the eye, build a head, and whip finish.
