Classic Recipe

  • Hook Ahrex SA270 or similar big-game saltwater, 5/0
  • Thread white or to match GSP or heavy flat waxed

Materials

  • Extension 100 lb mono or 60 lb hard fluorocarbon (1 length)
  • Tail station Long saddle hackles + bucktail (4-6 saddles, 1 clump)
  • Body stations Bucktail, reverse-tied (hollow style) (5-8 clumps)
  • Flash Flashabou or Angel Hair (sparse strands per station)
  • Eyes Large 3D adhesive eyes (2)
  • Adhesive UV resin at head and mono junction (small amounts)

How to tie it

  1. Lash a stiff mono extension along the hook shank and out the back. The extension carries the rear of the fly, so a 10-14 inch baitfish can be built on a single hook without hinging or fouling.
  2. At the tip of the mono extension, tie in saddle hackles and a sparse bucktail clump as the tail station; whip finish and glue that station.
  3. Work forward along the mono in stations: at each one, reverse-tie a sparse ring of bucktail (tips forward over the previous station, then folded back and locked) so each clump flares hollow around the core.
  4. Keep each station sparse. The emptiness is the design: sparse hollow ties let the fly breathe, shed water instantly on the pickup, and cast far despite its size.
  5. Continue stations onto the hook shank itself, stepping up clump size so the profile deepens toward the head; add a few strands of flash between stations.
  6. At the hook eye, tie the final and fullest hollow collar, whip finish, glue 3D eyes on either side and lock them with UV resin.
