Bead Wing Midge

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/emerger hook, 18-22
  • Thread Black 10/0

Materials

  • Body Black ostrich herl (Tying thread or fine dubbing)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (Fine wire)
  • Wing/Bubble Bead Clear/white glass bead (1 small seed bead at thorax)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the small glass bead to the eye, mount the hook, and start the thread.
  2. Bind in the fine silver rib at the bend.
  3. Build a slim black thread abdomen forward to the thorax, keeping it thread-thin.
  4. Counter-wrap the rib in 5-6 evenly spaced turns for segmentation and snip.
  5. Slide the glass bead back against the abdomen. It sits at the thorax as the emerging wing bubble, and lock it with a few thread turns front and back.
  6. Build a tiny black head behind the eye and whip finish.
