Bead Head Hare's Ear Grub

Nymph · Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 1X-2X long curved grub/nymph hook, 10-18
  • Thread Black or tan 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Gold brass or tungsten bead (7/64 in)
  • Weight Nontoxic wire (10-15 wraps)
  • Tail Hare's mask guard hairs (short tuft)
  • Body Hare's-ear dubbing (as needed)
  • Rib Gold oval tinsel or wire (1 length)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the gold bead to the eye and add 10-15 wraps of nontoxic wire behind it, shoving the wraps into the back of the bead to lock it.
  2. Tie in a short tuft of hare's guard hairs at the bend as a tail, and tie in the gold rib.
  3. Dub a shaggy, buggy body of hare's-ear dubbing along the curved shank to behind the bead.
  4. Spiral the rib forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns and tie off, then pick out the dubbing so it looks scruffy and alive.
  5. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
