Bead Body Scud

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/emerger hook, 12-18
  • Thread Olive or tan 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Colored brass/glass body bead (olive, orange or pink) (2.8 mm)
  • Weight Fine lead-free wire (optional) (few wraps)
  • Body Scud/sow dubbing blend (olive with orange & pink) (as needed)
  • Shellback Shrimp/scud foil or Scud Back strip (1)
  • Rib 5 lb clear or olive mono (1 length)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the colored body bead to the hook eye. If extra weight is wanted, add a few wraps of lead-free wire behind it.
  2. Tie in the mono rib and a strip of shellback foil at the bend, curving the thread along the hook to follow the scud's humped shape.
  3. Dub a plump, slightly shaggy body forward to behind the bead, blending olive with a touch of orange and pink for a lifelike scud color.
  4. Pull the shellback foil over the top and secure behind the bead.
  5. Counter-wrap the mono rib forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to segment the back and lock the shellback, then tie off behind the bead.
  6. Pick out dubbing on the underside to suggest legs, whip finish behind the bead and cement.
