Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 1X long, 10-12
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Extended Body Green drake olive (Small clump of deer hair or pre-formed foam body)
  • Tail Dark moose body (3 fibers)
  • Body Dubbing Olive ice dub (Sparse pinch)
  • Wing Post Medium dun material (One clump poly yarn)
  • Hackle Grizzly dyed olive hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start the thread mid-shank.
  2. Build the extended body first: bind a slim clump of olive deer hair to a needle, splay 3 moose fibers at the tip for tails, then rib forward with tight thread turns to segment a body one shank length long, and slide it off the needle.
  3. Lash the extended body to the rear of the shank so it juts straight off the bend, level with the water.
  4. Post a clump of dun poly yarn upright at the 65% mark for the parachute wing.
  5. Dub a sparse olive thorax up to and around the base of the post, half the dubbing you think.
  6. Wind the hackle 4-5 turns down the post, parachute style, and pin the tip under the thread.
  7. Sweep the hackle back, build a small head, and whip finish.
