Reference Recipe

  • Hook Barbless curved emerger hook (TMC 2499SPBL), 14-20
  • Thread PMD/pale 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Clear/pale bead (glass midge bead)
  • Tail Wood duck (flank fibers)
  • Body Brown permanent marker (goose biot)
  • Thorax PMD (Superfine dubbing)
  • Wing Natural case (partridge or pheasant rump aftershaft feather)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the glass midge bead to the eye, mount the curved hook, and start pale thread at the bend.
  2. Bind a short tail of wood duck flank fibers, about half a shank long.
  3. Tie in a brown goose biot and wrap it forward in touching turns to the 65% mark for a segmented abdomen.
  4. Tie in an aftershaft feather by the tip, then dub a plump PMD thorax up to the bead.
  5. Draw the wispy aftershaft feather forward over the thorax in an upward concave arch and bind it behind the bead so it stands like a folded wing.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and add a tiny drop of cement.
  7. Keep the aftershaft wing sparse and cupped so it traps a bubble like an emerging insect.
