Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy wide-gap streamer hook (B10S / TMC 8089), 1/0-4
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Black ostrich herl (lead dumbbell)
  • Tail Purple/black material (marabou)
  • Flash Red/pearl flash (Krystal Flash)
  • Body Purple or black material (cactus chenille (Estaz))
  • Collar Black ostrich herl (palmered saddle hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lash a lead dumbbell on top near the eye so the fly rides hook-point up, then start black thread.
  2. Bind a full purple-and-black marabou tail about one and a half shank lengths at the bend.
  3. Add several strands of red and pearl flash over the tail, tail-length.
  4. Tie in a black saddle hackle by the tip and a length of cactus chenille at the bend.
  5. Wrap the cactus chenille forward in touching turns to just behind the dumbbell, figure-8ing around the eyes.
  6. Palmer the saddle hackle forward through the body in 5-6 open turns and tie off behind the eyes.
  7. Build a thread head in front of the dumbbell, whip finish, and cement.
