  • Thread Danvilles Denier 140 Hot Orange

Materials

  • Tail Hareline Rabbit Strip Natural
  • Wire UTC Brassie Black
  • Belly Fino Skin Orange
  • Body Hareline Angora Goat Burnt Orange
  • Eyes Hareline Dumbell Eyes Meduim Nickel
  • Hackle Hareline India Hen Back Natural
  • Lead Hareline Lead .025

How to tie it

  1. Wrap 15 turns of Hareline Lead .025 on the shank; this is meant to be a heavy fly. Start the Hot Orange thread and set the Hareline Dumbell Eyes on top, back from the hook eye to leave plenty of room in front to finish. Figure-8 them, take soft wraps back over the lead, build a thread bank behind it, then wrap forward locking everything down.
  2. Put a drop of super glue on the tip of the bobbin and drown the eyes in it, letting it soak around them and back over the lead. Take a couple more wraps over the eyes.
  3. Wrap the thread back to about the barb, then forward to just behind the point. Peel a clump of fur off the hide of the Hareline Rabbit Strip Natural and tie it in on top as the tail, wrapping back over the butts to secure them.
  4. Move the thread about halfway up the shank, tie in the UTC Brassie Black wire on the side, and bind it back to the rabbit.
  5. Cut a strip of Fino Skin Orange, trimming one edge to a point so it is easier to tie in, and peel off the paper backing. Invert the fly and tie the strip in on the bottom with the dull side facing out (shiny side up against the shank), centred on the shank. Bind it back to the rabbit.
  6. Form a dubbing loop and wrap the thread back to the front of the rabbit. Fill the loop evenly with Hareline Angora Goat Burnt Orange, pinch, twist, and let it spin up; brush it out. Wrap it forward sweeping the fibers back each turn so none are trapped, and stop short of the eyes to leave the thorax open. Capture with thread, snip the loop, sweep the goat back and lock it in. Brush out.
  7. With the bodkin, part the goat on the belly and push it to the top. Lay the Fino Skin over the belly, then rib forward with the wire in evenly spaced turns, working the goat around each wrap so it is not trapped. Before the last wrap, unsecure the skin, pull it back, and tie the wire down on the shank so no wraps show on the skin.
  8. Tie in a Hareline India Hen Back feather by the tip on top and bind it back. Make a second dubbing loop, wrapped back toward the skin, and take the thread up around the eyes out of the way. Fill it with less Angora Goat than before, spin, brush, and wrap the thorax sweeping fibers back, taking a few turns around the eyes to cover the thread work. Secure in front of the eyes, snip the loop, sweep back and brush out.
  9. Wrap the hen forward without trapping the goat: two turns behind the eyes, then work in front of them, brushing and flaring the fibers as you go. Secure right behind the hook eye and snip the excess. Brush to separate the fibers.
  10. On the bottom of the fly, find the middle and part the fibers. Lay the Fino Skin straight over, pull it back slightly at the hook eye, check it is centred, and secure with a couple of wraps. Snip the excess.
  11. Build up the hot orange thread head, brush everything out, and whip finish without trapping fibers.
