Reference Recipe

  • Hook Barbless 1XL curved scud/caddis hook, 14-18
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Black tungsten bead (sized to hook)
  • Appendage/tail Cream semperfli cashmere monkey (short Antron tuft)
  • Shellback Olive thin skin mottled (Thin Skin strip)
  • Rib Clear head cement (4X mono)
  • Body Caddis green/olive (dubbing)
  • Thorax/legs Brown or black rubber legs (ostrich herl)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the black tungsten bead to the eye, mount the curved hook, and start olive thread at the bend.
  2. Bind a short tuft of cream Antron at the bend as the rear appendage, no longer than the hook gap.
  3. Tie in the mono rib and a strip of olive Thin Skin, leaving both hanging off the back.
  4. Dub a plump, segmented-looking caddis green body forward to just behind the bead.
  5. Pull the Thin Skin shellback over the top and rib forward with 5-6 evenly spaced turns of mono, then tie off; the mono makes the segmentation.
  6. Wrap one or two ostrich herls behind the bead for a soft thorax and legs, then sweep the fibers back.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead; darken the shellback over the thorax with a marker to suggest the head.
