Classic Recipe

  • Hook 2X-short emerger / curved nymph, 18-24
  • Thread Dark brown 16/0

Materials

  • Tail/shuck Brown or ginger hackle fibers (short tuft)
  • Abdomen Olive-brown superfine or beaver dubbing (as needed)
  • Flash Pearl Flashabou (flashback) (1 strand)
  • Wingcase/legs Wood duck or dark dun hackle fibers (small bunch)
  • Thorax Gray muskrat or beaver dubbing (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a short tuft of brown hackle fibers at the bend as a trailing shuck, no longer than half a shank.
  2. Dub a slim olive-brown abdomen over the rear two-thirds of the shank.
  3. Tie in a single strand of pearl Flashabou pointing rearward; this is pulled forward later as the flashback wing case.
  4. Tie in a small bunch of wood-duck (or dun hackle) fibers by the tips pointing forward over the eye to form legs.
  5. Dub a slightly fuller gray muskrat thorax up to just behind the eye.
  6. Pull the flash strand forward over the thorax and tie it off to form a shiny wing case, then fold the leg fibers back and split them to the sides.
  7. Whip finish and add a tiny drop of cement.
