Barbless Parachute Black Gnat

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Barbless standard dry-fly hook, 14-20
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Wing post White uni stretch (calf body hair or poly yarn)
  • Tail Black/dark dun material (hackle fibers)
  • Body Black ostrich herl (fine dubbing)
  • Hackle Grizzly or black hackle (1 dry-fly hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the barbless dry hook and start black thread at the 70% mark.
  2. Tie in a white upright post at that point and post the base with a few horizontal thread wraps to stand it up.
  3. Bind a short bunch of dark hackle fibers as a tail, splayed and about one shank long.
  4. Tie in the hackle by its stem against the post, then dub a slim black body from the tail up to and around the base of the post.
  5. Wind the hackle 4-5 turns horizontally around the post, working top to bottom, and secure under the post.
  6. Whip finish under the hackle at the base of the post, keeping the thread clear of the fibers, and add a tiny drop of cement to the post base.
