Bandit Salmonfly

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL dry fly, #4-8
  • Thread Orange 6/0

Materials

  • Body Salmonfly orange / black (Furry Foam body strip)
  • Underbody / thorax Burnt orange (Dubbing)
  • Wing Mottled pectoral fins (Medallion sheeting)
  • Hackle Brown or grizzly hackle (One feather, palmered thorax)
  • Legs Barred brown rubber legs (Round rubber, one pair each side)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and run thread to the bend.
  2. Tie in the Furry Foam body strip and wrap or bind it forward to the 65% mark, leaving a long tag at the tail for attraction (it can be trimmed shorter to taste).
  3. Dub a burnt-orange thorax base in front of the body.
  4. Tie in a Medallion sheeting wing flat over the back, reaching just past the bend.
  5. Add a pair of rubber legs on each side, splayed.
  6. Tie in and palmer a brown hackle through the thorax, then leave the front foam untrimmed so it pushes water when skated.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye and snip.
