Ballyhoo/Needlefish Fly

Baitfish · Striped Bass · Advanced · 1 version

As tied by LIFliesMike

  • Hook Gamakatsu SL12S, 4
  • Thread 210 denier (Danville flat wax nylon)

Materials

  • Support Bucktail
  • Body/belly MFC Scales n' Tails, white
  • Back MFC Scales n' Tails, turquoise
  • Sides Olive and blue Copic marker or Sharpie (optional)
  • Eyes Stick-on eyes
  • Coating Medium UV resin, then thin UV resin

How to tie it

  1. Tie a healthy portion of bucktail on around the hook point to support the rear and add width to the belly.
  2. Fold a small bunch of MFC Scales n' Tails in half, cut it short, and tie it in with a V tie just in front of the bucktail; fold it back as a platform.
  3. Tie in a healthy section of white MFC in the middle, further toward the hook eye, fold it back and V tie it, slightly offset left and right for width; most of the shank becomes the beak.
  4. Apply liquid fusion or soft tex inside the scales and tails back behind the bend to give the fly a spine so it does not foul.
  5. Tie in the turquoise MFC right in front of the white with a V tie, keeping the blue focused on top.
  6. Whip finish, then colour the sides with an olive marker, blending with blue if wanted.
  7. Super glue the stick-on eyes on, placed far back but still on the hook shank.
  8. Apply a coat of medium UV resin over the beak and eyes and cure, then a thin coat of resin and cure, moving the fly so it does not overheat.
  9. Trim the fly.
