Tie in the teal tail fibers at the front (speed method) and bind them back to the bend with touching turns, then return the thread forward; trim the waste.
Tie in the white floss and wrap a smooth body down and back, keeping the floss clear of the hook point; tie off and trim. White thread keeps the floss white when wet.
Tie in a short claret throat under the shank, if it runs long, hold it and gently pull it back into position.
Color the thread black (or switch to black thread) for the head.
Level a good-sized clump of mallard flank so the tips are together and tie it in as a flat wing extending just past the hook point; check it's straight, add a couple more turns.
Trim the wing butts, wind a neat head, whip finish, and apply head cement.
