Reference Recipe

  • Hook 60° jig or straight scud hook, #12-16
  • Thread Gray or olive 8/0

Materials

  • Balance pin Steel balance pin (Balance pin, extends past eye)
  • Bead Copper or black slotted tungsten bead (Slotted tungsten on the pin)
  • Hotspot tags Fluorescent orange egg sac (Glo-Brite floss, both ends)
  • Body Gray or olive synthetic hair (Ultra Nymph / scud dubbing)
  • Shell case Tan carapace (Dubbing brushed over the back)
  • Shell coating Clear head cement (UV resin)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the bead onto the balance pin and mount the hook.
  2. Lash the pin along the shank with the bead one bead width past the eye and set it with superglue for a level ride.
  3. At the bend tie in a short fluorescent-orange floss tag as the rear 'rocket spot'.
  4. Dub a plump gray or olive scud body forward to just behind the bead, leaving room for a matching orange hotspot at the front.
  5. Brush a strand of tan dubbing over the top of the body as a shellback and bind it down at both ends.
  6. Coat the shellback with a thin layer of UV resin and cure it to give the segmented scud shine.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and pick out a few belly fibers for legs.
