Balanced Moo Minnow

Streamer · Trout · Smallmouth Bass · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Jig/90-degree hook (Tiemco U-series or similar), 8-10
  • Thread White 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Tungsten bead, sized to hook (1/8") (1)
  • Pin/extension 3/4" sequin pin or small nail (1)
  • Tail/wing Cow (moo) hair or craft-fur baitfish colors, over white belly (1 clump)
  • Body/collar Ice Dub or Simi Seal, pearl/gray (pinch)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (a few strands)
  • Eyes Stick-on or painted eyes, optional (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a tungsten bead onto a half sequin pin, lash it along the shank with the bead extending past the eye, and build a thread dam behind it so the fly rides horizontal.
  2. Tie in a baitfish-profile wing/tail of cow (moo) hair or craft fur, darker over a white belly, about one and a half shank lengths, with a few strands of pearl flash.
  3. Dub or wrap a short pearl/gray collar to fill the body and blend the head.
  4. Add stick-on eyes to the sides if desired for a realistic minnow look.
  5. Whip finish, cement, and trim the wing to a clean minnow taper.
