Reference Recipe

  • Hook 60° jig or straight scud hook, #12-14
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Balance pin Steel balance pin (Short balance pin, extends past eye)
  • Bead Copper or black slotted tungsten bead (Small slotted tungsten on the pin)
  • Tail Black / maroon / olive material (Marabou, a small pinch)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (One or two strands)
  • Body Match tail (Micro Simi Seal or fine dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the small bead onto the balance pin and mount the hook.
  2. Lash the pin along the shank with the bead one bead width past the eye and glue it. Even on a tiny fly the forward weight is what makes it balance.
  3. Tie in a small marabou tail half to one shank long with a strand of pearl flash.
  4. Dub a slim, buggy body forward with micro Simi Seal or fine dubbing right up to the bead.
  5. Pick out a few fibers with a bodkin to give it life.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and snip.
