Reference Recipe

  • Hook 60° jig or straight streamer hook, #8-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Balance pin Steel balance pin (Balance pin, extends past eye)
  • Bead Gold or black bead (Slotted tungsten on the pin)
  • Tail Black or olive material (Marabou + Krystal Flash)
  • Body Match tail (Crystal chenille (Estaz))
  • Hackle Match tail (One saddle hackle, palmered)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the bead onto the balance pin and mount the hook.
  2. Lash the pin along the shank with the bead one bead width past the eye and set it with superglue so the fly rides horizontal.
  3. At the bend tie in a marabou tail one shank length long with a few strands of Krystal Flash.
  4. Tie in a saddle hackle by the tip and a length of crystal chenille at the bend.
  5. Wrap the crystal chenille forward to just behind the bead and tie off.
  6. Palmer the hackle forward over the body in 5-6 evenly spaced turns, tie off behind the bead, and whip finish.
