Start the black thread behind the eye and lay a base back to the bend.
Strip a dozen or so badger hackle fibers from one of the feathers you will use for the body and tie them in at the bend as a tail about a body length long. Snip the butts and leave the thread at the rear.
Select the two smallest feathers from the badger neck. Catch both in together at the bend on a small tie-in point, and snip the stems off at the front.
Advance the thread to the two-thirds point: the rear two-thirds of the shank is badger, the front third is white.
Palmer the first badger hackle forward to the two-thirds point and tie off. Then palmer the second up through the first, zig-zagging it between the turns and trapping as few fibers as possible. Tie off and snip.
Pull the badger fibers back to make a small flat spot ahead of them. Select a white hackle with barbs the same length as the badger and catch it in right in front of the badger, leaving the stem in place and binding it forward before snipping so it does not make a bump.
Wrap the white hackle five or six turns to cover the front third of the shank, tie off and snip.
Push the fibers back to clear room, whip finish, pull out any trapped fibers with a bodkin, and add a drop of head cement.
