Baby Boy Hopper

Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved terrestrial/dry hook (TMC 2499SP-BL), #12 (10-14)
  • Thread Black 70 denier

Materials

  • Thin foam Black craft foam mm (2mm strip (body))
  • Round rubber legs Black ostrich herl (1 pair, medium)
  • Deer or bleached elk hair Natural deer hair (1 small clump (wing/head))
  • Superglue Clear head cement (to lock tie-downs)

How to tie it

  1. Start black thread and lay a base along the shank.
  2. Tie a narrow strip of 2mm black foam in at the bend and bind it down the shank, leaving a short tag off the back for the abdomen.
  3. Pull the foam forward over the shank and bind at the 70% mark to form a segmented body, adding a thread crease between segments.
  4. Tie in black rubber legs on each side at the waist, splayed out.
  5. Clean and stack a small clump of deer hair, then tie it in as a downwing over the body reaching to the bend, butts forward.
  6. Pull the butts back and bind them to form a small bullet head.
  7. Whip finish, add a drop of superglue to the tie-downs, and trim the legs to about a shank long.
