Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3X-long nymph/stonefly hook, #8 (6-12)
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Lead wire Gray lead wire (.015-.020, front two-thirds)
  • Goose biots Black goose biots (2 (tails))
  • Wire Black wire (short length (rib))
  • Dubbing Black dubbing (abdomen + thorax)
  • Turkey or thin-skin strip Black floss (1 (wingcase))
  • Rubber legs Black ostrich herl (2 pairs)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap 8-10 turns of lead over the front two-thirds of the shank and bind it flat.
  2. Tie in two splayed black biot tails at the bend forming a V, and catch in a length of black wire.
  3. Dub a slim tapered black abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Rib the abdomen with 5-6 open counter-wraps of wire and tie off.
  5. Tie in a black wingcase strip and a pair of black rubber legs at the front of the abdomen.
  6. Dub a fuller thorax to the eye and tie a second pair of legs at the front.
  7. Pull the wingcase over the thorax and tie off, then whip finish and cement.
