Reference Recipe

  • Hook Daiichi 1130 or TMC 2488 curved emerger, 18 (18-20)
  • Thread Black UTC 70 denier

Materials

  • Tungsten bead Copper bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Antron yarn Gray brown antron yarn (Half a strand (trailing shuck))
  • Ultra wire Copper wire (1 strand, small (rib))
  • Foam parachute post White thin fly foam (1 small strip (wing bud))
  • Peacock herl Natural peacock herl (1-2 strands (thorax))

How to tie it

  1. Slide the copper bead to the eye, start the black thread behind it, and wrap a base rearward, stopping directly above the barb.
  2. Split a short length of gray-brown Antron yarn in half lengthwise to thin it, tie one half in at the bend as a trailing shuck, and trim the shuck to about half a shank long. Bind the butts down and build a slight thread taper up the body.
  3. Catch a piece of small copper wire against the near side just behind the bead and bind it back to the shuck with clean, even wraps, then bring the thread back to the bead.
  4. Spiral the copper wire forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to rib the body, tie it off behind the bead, and helicopter off the excess.
  5. Tie in a thinned strip of white foam post directly behind the bead with the tag pointing rearward, using firm wraps to build a small thorax base.
  6. Tie in the peacock herl behind the bead and take enough turns to build a bushy thorax, then tie off and trim the excess carefully; herl is brittle.
  7. Fold the foam forward over the top of the thorax, catch it with 2-3 tight wraps behind the bead, then whip finish underneath, right behind the bead.
  8. Trim the foam tag flush to finish the fly.
