Materials

  • Fly foam Tan fly tying foam (3mm strip (body))
  • Deer hair Natural deer hair (1 clump (bullet head))
  • Elk hair Natural deer hair (sparse (wing))
  • Web wing Mottled tan material (1 strip (underwing))
  • Krystal Flash Rootbeer flash (few strands)
  • Round rubber legs Tan barred rubber legs medium (1 pair)
  • McFlylon Lime mcflylon (small tuft (sighter))

How to tie it

  1. Start tan thread and lay a base over the back two-thirds of the shank.
  2. Tie a strip of tan 3mm foam down at the bend and along the shank so a tag hangs off the back as the hopper butt.
  3. Tie in a strip of mottled web-wing and a sparse elk-hair wing over the foam, reaching to the end of the body, plus a few strands of rootbeer flash.
  4. Stack a clump of natural deer hair with tips pointing back over the wing, bind it at the front, then pull the butts back over the top to form a bullet head and bind down behind it.
  5. Tie a tuft of lime McFlylon upright at the head as a hi-vis sighter.
  6. Tie in tan round rubber legs on each side, splayed out.
  7. Whip finish under the head, add a drop of Zap-A-Gap to lock the foam and hair, and trim the legs to length.
