Reference Recipe

  • Hook Wet-fly / 1X-long nymph hook, #12 (10-14)
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Hackle fibers or floss Red hackle fibers (short (tail/tag))
  • Peacock herl Natural peacock herl (3-4 strands (body))
  • Fine wire Gold or copper fine wire (optional (counter-rib))
  • Hen hackle Brown or furnace hen hackle (1 feather (soft collar))

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and tie in a short tail or tag of red hackle fibers at the bend.
  2. Catch in 3-4 peacock herls by the tips, plus a fine wire counter-rib if you want durability.
  3. Twist the herls into a rope with the thread and wrap forward to the 80% mark for a full, buggy body; tie off.
  4. If used, counter-wrap the wire forward in 4-5 turns to protect the herl and tie off.
  5. Tie in a brown or furnace hen hackle by the tip and wind 2-3 turns as a soft, swept collar.
  6. Stroke the fibers back and down, build a small head, whip finish and cement.
