Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Salmon/steelhead (Daiichi 2441); trout hook for smaller versions, #4-8
  • Thread Black (Semperfli Nano Silk) Nano Silk (smooth, for wing work)

Materials

  • Hackle fibers Red hackle fibers (Small bunch (tail))
  • Holographic tinsel Medium brown holographic tinsel (1 length (rib))
  • Dirty Bug Yarn Mottled olive dirty bug yarn (1 length (body))
  • Partridge Mottled, larger feather (1 (throat))
  • Oak turkey slips Mottled thin skin (1 matched pair (wing))
  • UV resin (e.g. Solarez) (Head coat)

How to tie it

  1. Coat the shank with thread back to just above the hook point.
  2. Strip the webby fluff from a red hackle, even the side fibers, and tie in a neat red-fiber tail; bind the butts down.
  3. Tie in the medium brown holographic tinsel for the rib.
  4. Lay the mottled olive Dirty Bug Yarn along the shank to keep it level, then wrap a tapered, cigar-shaped body forward; tie off without crowding the eye.
  5. Rib the body with evenly spaced turns of the brown holographic tinsel for subtle segmentation and flash; tie off.
  6. Strip the tip and stem from a larger mottled partridge feather, lay the fibers under the shank just ahead of the body, and tie in a flared throat.
  7. Cut matching slips from a left and right mottled oak turkey feather and pair them, tips together (a coat of Fixatif on the feather beforehand keeps slips from fraying).
  8. Set the wing on top reaching to the end of the tail: pinch the thread between your fingers over the slips and pull straight down to fold the wing in place; repeat until it sits right.
  9. Trim the wing butts and build a neat tapered thread head.
  10. Whip finish, straighten the throat hackle, and cure a coat of UV resin over the head and wraps.
