Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2X-long dry-fly hook, #10 (8-12)
  • Thread Orange 6/0

Materials

  • Dubbing Burnt orange (body)
  • Antron Amber zelon or antron (sparse (underwing))
  • Elk hair Dark natural elk hair (1 clump (wing))
  • Dry-fly hackle Brown hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start orange thread at the eye and wrap back to the bend.
  2. Dub a fat, slightly tapered burnt-orange body forward to the 70% mark.
  3. Tie in a sparse underwing of amber Antron reaching to the bend.
  4. Clean and stack a clump of dark elk hair, then tie it in as a downwing tent over the body reaching just past the bend, butts facing the eye.
  5. Trim the elk butts to a short stub and bind them down to form a head base.
  6. Tie in a brown hackle at the front and palmer 3-4 turns through the head, then tie off.
  7. Whip finish a neat head and cement.
