Tyer Recipe

  • Hook 1x-long nymph, barbless, #8-14
  • Thread Black 8/0 or 70 denier

Materials

  • Lead-free wire 0.015" lead free wire (~8 wraps on the front third (weight))
  • Pheasant tail fibers Natural pheasant tail fibers (3-4 (tail))
  • Oval tinsel Gold, small or medium (1 length (rib))
  • Hare's mask dubbing with guard hairs Natural hare s ear dubbing (Body and thorax)
  • Duck quill slip (original: kingfisher feather) Dyed kingfisher blue (1 slip (wingcase))
  • Hungarian partridge Gray or brown mottled hungarian partridge (1 feather (hackle))

How to tie it

  1. Wrap about eight turns of 0.015 wire over the front third of the shank; dam with black thread front and back.
  2. Tie in 3-4 pheasant tail fibers at the bend for a moderately short mayfly-nymph tail.
  3. Catch in small or medium oval gold tinsel just behind the weight.
  4. Rake a tuft of hare's mask (underfur and guard hairs), wax the thread, and dub a buggy body forward to the one-third point.
  5. Rib with about four turns of the oval tinsel and tie off.
  6. Tie in a kingfisher-blue duck slip for the wingcase at the one-third point, with a couple of extra securing wraps.
  7. Dub a thicker clump of hare's mask for the thorax.
  8. Fold the blue slip over the thorax and tie it down, leaving a little room at the eye. Make the wingcase generous.
  9. Tie in a partridge feather by the thick stem and take two full wraps; catch off, snip the excess stem.
  10. Build a stout nymph head, whip finish, cement, and pick out the hare's mask with a dubbing brush for extra bugginess.
