Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, #18 (16-22)
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 70 denier

Materials

  • Holographic tinsel Orange holographic tinsel (medium, short length (underbody))
  • Tying thread body Fluorescent orange thread (as needed)
  • Monofilament tippet Clear weed guard (6X, short loop (hackle core))
  • Grizzly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start orange thread, lay a smooth base, and tie in a length of orange holographic tinsel at the bend.
  2. Wrap the tinsel forward in touching turns to the 70% mark for a bright segmented body, tie off and trim.
  3. Tie in a short loop of 6X mono pointing forward over the eye. This is the post the hackle will stack against.
  4. Tie in a grizzly hackle by the stem at the front of the body.
  5. Wrap the hackle 4-6 turns up the standing mono loop, then fold the loop back over the top of the fly and bind it down. This pulls the hackle into a low, flush bundle over the body.
  6. Trim the loop tag and any stray fibers underneath so the fly sits flush, then whip finish a small orange head and cement.
