How to tie it
Tie the Uni-Stretch gills in on a size 14 Daiichi 1760 and whip finish, but leave a little thread sticking out beyond where the bead will sit. When you reattach the thread it relocks the Uni-Stretch, so you never need glue at that step and never make a mess of it.
Slide a 3/32 black nickel bead on and start building the taper immediately, usually about half the shank, before the wire goes in.
Use extra small red wire up to about a size 12 hook. Small wire on a 14 will make the finished fly look overwhelmingly red in the water even though it looks fine at the bench. Flies always look different wet than dry, and that is worth thinking about.
Notch the end of the anti-static bag strip with the tips of your scissors and tie it in by that notch. Without the notch the thread tension can tear the strip on the very first wrap.
Wrap the ASB forward in touching turns, no overlaps and no gaps, then a few turns over and in front of the bead. Nick the tinsel with the scissor tips and pull rather than cutting straight across. It leaves nothing behind for a clean thorax.
Counter-rib the red wire forward for six or seven segments, secure it well and helicopter it out, then spin the bobbin to flatten the thread and place wraps exactly where you want them.
Whip finish, trim the gills, and coat with superglue. Less is more with wraps on these bugs. Keep them skinny.
