Reference Recipe

  • Hook Articulated streamer, short-shank front hook joined to a rear trailer hook by braided wire and beads, #4 front, #6 rear
  • Thread Olive (front), White (rear) 6/0 (140 denier for the deer-hair head)

Materials

  • Rear streamer hook Black shank (1, size 6)
  • Braided connection wire Clear/white braided connection wire (20 lb, short length)
  • 3D beads Gold bead (2-3)
  • Marabou or zonker tail Olive marabou (1 sparse clump / short strip)
  • Ice Dub Olive ice dub (body pinch)
  • Schlappen Olive schlappen or saddle hackle (1 feather (rear collar))
  • Front streamer hook Black shank (1, size 4)
  • Dumbbell eyes Black/nickel dumbbell eyes (1 pair, medium)
  • UV polar chenille Olive uv straggle chenille mm (short length)

  • Deer belly hair Olive/natural deer belly hair (several clumps (head))

How to tie it

  1. On the rear hook, tie in a sparse marabou or zonker tail off the bend about 1.5 shank lengths long, with a few strands of flash down each side.
  2. Dub a slim Ice Dub body forward, then wind a schlappen feather as a soft collar 2-3 turns; whip finish the rear hook. Use half the material you think.
  3. On the front hook, lash a length of braided wire down the shank, thread on 2-3 beads, loop back through the rear hook eye and bind the tags so the rear hook rides about a gap-width behind. The beads form the flexible joint.
  4. Bind the dumbbell eyes on top of the shank one eye-length back from the front hook eye with tight figure-8 wraps; mounted on top they flip the fly to ride point-up.
  5. Behind the eyes wrap 3-4 turns of polar chenille, then tie a pair of barred sili legs along each side, splayed outward.
  6. In front of the eyes stack a wad of Laser Dub top and bottom as an underbody, then spin and pack 2-3 clumps of deer belly hair for the head, packing each clump tight before adding the next.
  7. Whip finish at the eye and cement, then trim the deer hair to a broad flat wedge (wide and blocky up top, tapered underneath) so the fly pushes water and slides.
