Materials

  • Weight (.020 lead wire, 8-10 turns in the centre of the shank)
  • Body Apricot (FNF Daphnia Fritz)
  • Hot spot Fluorescent fire orange (tying thread)

How to tie it

  1. Put eight to ten turns of.020 lead wire on the middle of a size 10 scud hook. There is almost nothing else on this fly, so the lead is what gets it down.
  2. Start fluorescent fire orange UTC 70 and build thread ramps either side of the lead, then cover most of the lead. The Fritz is translucent, so covering the lead stops it showing through, and the ramps stop the material sliding.
  3. Peel a little Fritz off the end of the chunk to expose the cord, tie it in at the back and bring the thread forward, throwing a half hitch to park it.
  4. Wrap the Fritz forward, preening the fibers back as you go, four or five turns is plenty. Give it a twist before tying off. Gathering the material makes the tie-off far cleaner.
  5. Tie off with a couple of wraps over and in front, pull everything back and build a fluorescent orange hot spot head, then whip finish.
  6. Peel the fibers back and touch a lighter to any stragglers, then glue the thread wraps. Wet the fly and you will see the translucent glow that makes it work.
