Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved emerger hook (TMC 2487), 18-20
  • Thread Olive UTC 70 (or 12/0)

Materials

  • Body Wapsi Super Fine dry-fly dubbing, BWO (pinch)
  • Thorax SLF Spikey Squirrel dubbing, natural gray (pinch)
  • Wing Nature's Spirit CDC, medium slate dun (1 clump)
  • Sighter EP Trigger Point fibers, UV orange (small bundle)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread mid-shank on the curved hook. Note there is no tail, which gives the clean profile of an emerging bug and keeps the fly riding correctly.
  2. Dub a slim BWO body of Super Fine down around the bend and forward to the 60% mark.
  3. Tie in a clump of medium slate dun CDC as a low emerger wing over the thorax.
  4. Split the CDC wing with a small bundle of UV orange Trigger Point fibers to create two wings and a hi-vis hot spot for tough light.
  5. Dub a slightly fuller gray Spikey Squirrel thorax around the wing base to suggest the emerging legs and trapped shuck.
  6. Whip finish and cement; the fly should float deep, trapped in the surface film.
