Ant-Dry Fly

Terrestrial · Trout · Beginner · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 14-20
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body Black Superfine dubbing (Two segments)
  • Hackle Black rooster (1, sparse at waist)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, start thread, and dub a tight, glossy rear ball over the back third, stopping at the 40% mark.
  2. Leave a bare thread waist and tie in a black hackle by the stem at the midpoint.
  3. Take 2-3 turns of hackle at the waist only (sparse, just enough for a leggy footprint) and tie off.
  4. Dub a slightly smaller front ball (head) over the front third, keeping the waist pinched thin.
  5. Whip finish at the eye and snip.
