Angel Hair Baitfish

Baitfish · Striped Bass · Bluefish · False Albacore · Jack · Snook · Redfish · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Tiemco 811S or Gamakatsu SC15, 1/0-4
  • Thread White or clear mono 6/0 or mono thread

Materials

  • Belly Pearl or polar white Angel Hair (2-3 sparse clumps)
  • Back Olive, gray, or blue Angel Hair (2-3 sparse clumps)
  • Lateral line Holographic silver Angel Hair (few strands)
  • Eyes Small stick-on eyes (1 pair)
  • Head UV resin or epoxy (1 coat)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread mid-shank and tie in a sparse clump of pearl Angel Hair under the shank, extending 1.5-2 shank lengths past the bend, for the belly.
  2. High-tie 2-3 progressively shorter sparse clumps of the back color on top of the shank, working toward the eye. Stacking short-over-long builds a tapered silhouette from a material with no inherent shape.
  3. Add a few strands of holographic silver along each side for the lateral line.
  4. Keep everything sparse; Angel Hair is intensely flashy and a little goes a long way.
  5. Whip finish, glue on small stick-on eyes, and coat the head area with a thin layer of UV resin to lock the eyes and form a small translucent head.
  6. Pick out and trim any stray fibers to an even baitfish taper.
