Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1X-2X-long curved nymph (Daiichi 1710 / TMC 2302), 16-20
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Black or copper tungsten bead (1, optional)
  • Tail Dyed-olive partridge (or wood duck) (Divided, 2 clumps)
  • Rib Extra-fine copper wire (1 strand)
  • Abdomen Pale olive (PMD) or olive-brown (Baetis) ostrich herl or fine dubbing (Thin)
  • Shellback & wing case Olive thin skin / Scud Back (1 strip)
  • Legs Partridge fibers (Few per side)
  • Thorax Brown or peacock synthetic dubbing (Small pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook (slide on a bead first if using), start thread, and run it to the bend.
  2. Split a few partridge fibers into two small clumps and bind one to each side so the tails spread about a hook gap, a slim mayfly footprint.
  3. Tie in the copper wire and a narrow strip of olive Scud Back, then twist ostrich herl (or fine dubbing) onto the thread and wrap a thin abdomen to the 60% mark.
  4. Pull the Scud Back over as a shellback and counter-rib the wire forward in 5-6 open turns for crisp segmentation; snip.
  5. Tie in a short wing-case strip, then dub a small thorax to the 85% mark.
  6. Sweep a few partridge fibers back along each side as legs to the hook point.
  7. Fold the wing case over the thorax, bind at the eye, snip, and whip finish.
