Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry-fly hook (e.g. TMC 5262/5263), 6-12
  • Thread Tan 3/0 monocord

Materials

  • Underbody Tan 2mm foam (one strip)
  • Overbody Tan/rust/purple 2mm foam (one strip)
  • Body Olive Krystal Chenille (rear half)
  • Body hackle Brown rooster (palmered)
  • Underwing Rainbow Krystal Flash (a few strands)
  • Overwing Cow/yearling elk hair (one clump)
  • Legs Medium brown round rubber (two pair)
  • Thorax Bronze peacock synthetic dubbing (front third)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a 2XL dry hook and lay a tan thread base.
  2. Bind a foam strip at the bend as the underbody, then tie in a brown hackle and the Krystal Chenille.
  3. Wrap the chenille forward to mid-shank, then palmer the hackle back over it and lock it down.
  4. Fold the overbody foam forward and bind it at mid-shank to segment the body.
  5. Tie in Krystal Flash, then a clump of elk hair as the wing with tips to the bend.
  6. Add sets of rubber legs on each side with figure-8 wraps.
  7. Dub a bronze peacock thorax, pull the remaining foam over as a head and tie it down.
  8. Whip finish behind the eye and trim the foam head.
