Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-18
  • Thread Black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Body Black 2mm foam (one strip, two segments)
  • Hackle Black cock (1-2 turns at the waist)
  • Sighter Orange foam (small tuft, optional)
  • Legs Black micro rubber (one pair, optional)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a dry-fly hook and start black thread.
  2. Bind a strip of black foam at the bend, fold it forward to form the rear gaster and pinch it off with thread at mid-shank.
  3. Take one or two turns of black cock hackle at the waist for legs.
  4. Pull the foam forward again to build the front hump and head, and tie it down behind the eye.
  5. Optionally add a tuft of orange foam on top as a sighter.
  6. Whip finish under the foam head and trim clean.
