Tyer Recipe

  • Hook 1x-long wet fly, #8-14
  • Thread Black 70 denier UTC

Materials

  • Mylar tinsel Gold, small (1 length (tag))
  • Barred wood duck Natural mallard flank (~10 fibers (tail))
  • Rooster hackle (grizzly half-cape works) Dyed blue indian cape hackle (1 feather, palmered)
  • Floss or tinsel Gold oval tinsel (2 layers (body))
  • Duck quill slips (paired) Dyed red duck quill slip (1 left + 1 right (wing))

How to tie it

  1. Lay a black thread base back to the start of the bend.
  2. Tie in small gold tinsel (gold side against the hook), wrap a 2-3mm tag rearward, then fold it back over itself and wrap forward; tie off.
  3. Tie in about 10 barred wood duck fibers for a fairly long tail, natural curve upward; bind the butts down as underbody.
  4. Tie in a blue-dyed hackle feather at the rear by its stripped lower stem (strip fibers from half the feather so it isn't too bushy).
  5. Take the thread to just behind the eye and tie in gold floss there; wrap it back to the tail and forward again for two layers so the body stays golden when wet; tie off and snip.
  6. Palmer the blue hackle forward in evenly spaced open turns over the body, preening fibers back so they stand perpendicular; tie off at the front without trapping fibers, and snip the tip.
  7. Cut matching red slips from a left and a right duck quill, slightly less than one hook gap wide.
  8. Measure the paired slips to reach the bend, then mount them on top with pinch wraps, pinching tightly and pulling straight down; check they sit upright and on top.
  9. Trim the wing butts, build a neat black head, whip finish, and cement.
