Consensus of Tailwater Fly Shop, Fly Fishing Bow River

  • Hook Umpqua XS415H tarpon hook (per description link)

Materials

  • Tail Marabou feathers
  • Body Synthetic palmering chenille, 15 mm, tied in purple in both videos (has a cord core instead of wire)
  • Eyes 6 mm (1/4 in) stick-on eyes, Fish Skull Living Eyes 6 mm per Tailwater description link
  • Finish UV resin over and between the eyes (Tailwater: Loon UV Thick; Bow River: Bone Dry Solarez)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and wrap it back along the hook shank.
  2. Match the tips of a couple of marabou feathers and tie them in on top of the shank as the tail, keeping them on top so they do not roll to one side.
  3. Secure the marabou butts with thread wraps forward over the shank for a smooth, bump-free base.
  4. Tie in the chenille by its inner cord at the rear, on the near side of the hook.
  5. Palmer the chenille forward in touching wraps, pulling the fibres back with every wrap so they stack and do not get trapped, up to just behind the eye.
  6. Tie off the chenille with a couple of thread wraps, stroke the fibres back, and build a small thread head.
  7. Whip finish.
  8. Fix an eye on each side of the head behind the hook eye, keeping them parallel, and secure them with UV resin, filling the gap between and over the eyes.
