Reference Recipe
- Hook Standard wet-fly hook, 12-16
- Thread Black 8/0 (70 denier)
Materials
- Body Peacock herl (2-3 strands)
- Hackle Black hen (2-3 turns as a beard)
- Wing Mottled brown hen quill (low slip over the back)
How to tie it
- Mount a wet-fly hook and start black thread, running to the bend.
- Tie in 2-3 peacock herls, rope them and wrap a slim body to the 75% mark.
- Tie in a black hen hackle by the tip and take 2-3 soft turns, sweeping the fibers down and back as a beard throat.
- Cut a rolled slip of mottled brown hen quill for the wing.
- Set the wing low over the body, tips to the bend, and pinch-loop it down.
- Build a small tapered head, whip finish and varnish.
