Alder Wet Fly

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet-fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Body Peacock herl (2-3 strands)
  • Hackle Black hen (2-3 turns as a beard)
  • Wing Mottled brown hen quill (low slip over the back)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a wet-fly hook and start black thread, running to the bend.
  2. Tie in 2-3 peacock herls, rope them and wrap a slim body to the 75% mark.
  3. Tie in a black hen hackle by the tip and take 2-3 soft turns, sweeping the fibers down and back as a beard throat.
  4. Cut a rolled slip of mottled brown hen quill for the wing.
  5. Set the wing low over the body, tips to the bend, and pinch-loop it down.
  6. Build a small tapered head, whip finish and varnish.
