Alder Dry Fly

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Body Peacock herl (2-3 strands)
  • Wing Mottled brown hen quill (low tented slip)
  • Hackle Dark furnace or black cock (4-5 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a dry-fly hook and start black thread.
  2. Tie in 2-3 peacock herls at the bend, twist them into a rope and wrap a plump body to the 70% mark.
  3. Tie in a slip of mottled hen quill as a low, tent-style wing over the body, tips reaching the bend.
  4. Tie in a dark furnace or black cock hackle by the stem in front of the wing.
  5. Take 4-5 close turns of hackle and tie off.
  6. Sweep stray fibers, build a small head and whip finish.
