Classic Recipe

  • Hook Streamer/stinger hook with articulated shank option, 2-4
  • Thread Olive or tan 6/0 or 210 denier for spinning deer hair

Materials

  • Tail Rabbit zonker strip, olive or tan (1)
  • Body Seal-type dubbing in a dubbing loop (1 loop)
  • Overlay Rabbit zonker strip (1)
  • Head Deer hair and Laser Dub, spun and stacked (1 bunch each)
  • Weight Lead eyes or cone, optional (1)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend. Tie in a rabbit zonker strip as a tail, one to one and a half shank lengths, for undulating sculpin action.
  2. Spin seal-type dubbing in a dubbing loop and wrap forward to build a buggy semi-seal body up to the front third; the dubbing loop traps air and helps the fly tread water.
  3. Lay a second zonker strip over the top as a wing/overlay and tie it down, letting the hide add profile and movement.
  4. Spin a collar of deer hair mixed with Laser Dub at the head to create a broad sculpin head that retains shape and pushes water.
  5. Trim the deer hair head flat on the bottom and rounded on top to give the wide, diving sculpin profile.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and cement.
