Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 18-24
  • Thread black 8-0 / 70 denier

Materials

  • Body Black ostrich herl (tying thread or fine dubbing)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (fine wire (optional))
  • Wing White uni stretch (poly or CDC)
  • Hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather, trimmed flat below)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the small hook and start black thread.
  2. Build a slim black body from the bend to the 70% mark, adding a fine wire counter-rib for segmentation if you like.
  3. Tie in a short white poly wing flat over the body, or split it spent, for visibility.
  4. Wind 2-3 turns of grizzly hackle at the thorax.
  5. Trim the hackle flat underneath so the fly sits low in the film.
  6. Whip finish at the eye.
