Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard wet fly (e.g. Mustad 3906), 8-14
  • Thread black 8/0

Materials

  • Tip Yellow floss (small)
  • Tail Black hackle tips (or black hackle fibers) (small bunch)
  • Body Grey fur (muskrat or grey rabbit) (full shank)
  • Hackle Orange hen hackle, as a collar/beard (1)
  • Wing White duck quill slips (matched pair)
  • Head Black ostrich herl (small)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and form a small yellow floss tip above the barb.
  2. Tie in a short tail of black hackle tips or fibers.
  3. Dub a slim grey fur body forward along the shank.
  4. Wind or tie in an orange hen hackle as a soft collar/beard swept down.
  5. Set matched white duck quill slips as a low downwing over the body (the fly was also fished wingless).
  6. Whip finish a small black head and cement.
